Sources tell NY1 that the city has reached a settlement with five men who were falsely convicted of the rape of a female jogger in Central Park, a crime that shocked the city 25 years ago.
Sources tell NY1 that the group known as ‘The Central Park Five’ will share a settlement of about $ 40 million from the city.
Arrested as teens, the five long claimed they were coerced into admitting to the 1989 crime, which drew international attention.
They all served time in prison, but their convictions were overturned in 2002 after investigators found that DNA evidence showed that another man was solely responsible for the crime.
The men filed a wrongful conviction lawsuit in April, and Mayor Bill de Blasio made a campaign promise to settle their case.
The settlement must still be approved by the city comptroller and a federal judge.
The New York City Department of Law has declined to comment on the case.
