Sources: Over 100 Indicted in Harlem Gang Takedown

More than 100 people have been indicted over their alleged connection to three rival gangs in Manhattan, sources tell NY1.

Some of those people were taken into custody during an early morning police raid on two housing projects in Harlem.

Local residents who spoke with NY1 say it’s good to see police cracking down in their neighborhood.

“It’s good, because my kids play around here, and I don’t want anything to happen to anybody’s kids over here, so that’s a good thing,” said one resident.

“It’s really sad, it really is. You know like, we’re supposed to live here in peace, especially the young people. They should be able to get along,” said another resident.

Investigators say the gangs are responsible for more than 20 shootings and two murders, including the killing of Tayshana “Chicken” Murphy in 2011.

Police say she was an innocent victim of a gang turf war.

Two men have already been convicted of murder in that case.
