A 29-year-old man clung to life Thursday after nearly drowning during an early-morning dip off of Coney Island’s Steeplechase Pier, police said.

The man jumped off the pier near W. 16th St. and Surf Ave. shortly after 2:30 a.m. apparently to join two women who were swimming in the ocean nearby, police said. He went under but did not immediately emerge, police said.

NYPD and Fire Dept. divers searched the area for nearly an hour before a Fire Dept. diver pulled the unconscious man from the water 14 blocks away at W. 30th St. and Surf Ave., authorities said. He was rushed to Coney Island Hospital at 3:37 a.m. where he was listed in grave condition.

Police were investigating the incident but said it appeared to be an accident.
