A television advertisement showing outdoor workers yelling at women in Australia has put a new slant on old brand of sexism – and both men and women are criticizing it as sexist.
The new campaign for Snickers suggests hungry construction workers will reverse form and shout positive, empowering things to unsuspecting women walking by.
“You want to hear a filthy word?” a construction worker yells to a woman on the sidewalk. “Gender bias.”
Not to mention those are actually two words, the ad implies that the norm for men working in the building trade is a constant state of misogyny.
Which prompted confusion and criticism from men.
“I don’t really understand this @SNICKERS ad… Eat snickers and go back to being a lout?” wrote one man.
It also concerned women.
The Snickers Facebook page blew up with comments ranging from boycott demands to exhortations telling folks to lighten up, it’s just a candy bar.
“Get a funny bone,” one poster wrote.
The advertisement has gone viral on YouTube, with more than 1.1 million views.
It also generated more than 2,000 comments, many of them echoing the sentiments on Snickers’ Facebook page.
“Am I missing something here?” wrote one commenter. “Isn’t yelling out to anyone somewhat classless (unless it’s an emergency or such)?”
