A well-funded charter school booster group has intensified its air war against Mayor de Blasio with a vast TV blitz blasting Hizzoner the rest of March.
Families for Excellent Schools dropped just under $ 1 million on TV ads ripping the mayor and praising charter schools for the week ending March 31, an insider with knowledge of the ad buy said Wednesday.
That’s on top of $ 3.6 million the group reportedly spent on TV ads that aired earlier in March.
Documents filed with the Joint Commission on Public Ethics show the group spent another $ 115,767 on lobbying and advertising during the first two months of 2014.
A spokesman wouldn’t confirm or dispute any of the group’s reported spending, but said details could show up on future filings.
The group aims to curry favor in the upcoming state budget deliberations, said Billy Easton, statewide head of the Alliance for Quality Education.
“This was a highly coordinated lobbying campaign by top donors,” Easton said.
“Their goal was to get charter schools a sweetheart deal.”
