De Blasio Picks New Fire Commissioner

Mayor de Blasio has picked a new fire commissioner.

Sources say he will tap retired Chief Daniel Nigro, the department’s former top uniformed officer.

Nigro is said to be replacing Sal Cassano, a holdover from Mayor Bloomberg’s administration.

The new commissioner is credited with leading the FDNY after the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks.

He took over as chief of department when his predecessor was killed that day.

Bob Ungar, spokesperson for the Uniformed EMT and Paramedics Union, the Uniformed EMS Officers Union and the Fire Alarm Dispatchers Union, said Nigro would be a good choice.

“If sources are correct, we would applaud the choice of Chief Nigro to be the fire commissioner. We know the chief. We know that he is a highly seasoned fire department officer. He knows the job and knows the people. If it’s him, we wish him well and look forward to working with him,” Ungar said.
