India’s opposition party seems poised to sweep the world’s biggest election and New Yorkers with connections to the country are watching the outcome closely.
Early results show Narendra Modi of the Bharatiya Janata Party has a commanding lead over the Ghandi legacy, National Congress party, which has been in power for a decade.
The NCP has already conceded defeat.
It’s the first time a single party has won an outright majority since the 1984 national election.
Over 550 million votes were cast over five weeks.
Here in New York, some Indian Americans are praising the results. They hope Modi’s party will fight corruption and turn the economy around.
“This is a very big victory of the Indian democracy,” said one Indian New Yorker.
“He wants to work more for the farmers because India is a country of farmers, where we need more and more crop,” said another Indian New Yorker.
The full results are expected later today.
Modi will be the country’s 14th Prime Minister.
