Brooklyn’s Long Island College Hospital has begun diverting Fire Department ambulances.
The move is part of a closure plan approved by the State Health Department.
Ambulances owned by the Cobble Hill hospital will continue to run until it closes later this month.
As of Thursday morning, FDNY vehicles will have to take their patients somewhere else.
The shutdown plans are going into effect after negotiations broke down between SUNY and Brooklyn Health Partners, which wanted to take over and keep the facility as a full service hospital.
Residents who rely on the hospital are upset by the failure.
“Well let’s put it this way, when it’s you or someone in your family who’s in need and there’s a matter of minutes, then ask the question which is more important, healthcare or a luxury high rise,” said one Cobble Hill resident.
SUNY is now in negotiations with the second-place bidder, which plans to keep some medical services but not a full-service-hospital.
Meanwhile, Brooklyn Health Partners is suing, claiming SUNY did not negotiate in good faith.
