Facing elimination for the second straight game, the Rangers got 36 saves from Henrik Lundqvist and goals from Martin St. Louis, Carl Hagelin and Derick Brassard in a 3-1 win in Game 6 of their second-round series against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Rangers, who trailed the series 3 games to 1, have now won two straight and have forced a Game 7 back in Pittsburgh Tuesday night.
St. Louis, whose mother died earlier in the week, opened the scoring a little more than three minutes into the first period. His father and sister were in attendance.
Hagelin followed with an unassisted tally a little less than four minutes later.
The Penguins’ Brandon Sutter cut the deficit in half with a goal late in the first period, but it would prove to be the only goal on the evening for Pittsburgh.
A miscue by Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury allowed Brassard to put in a rebound to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead late in the second period.
Lundqvist made 11 saves in a scoreless third period to preserve the win.
The time of Game 7 on Tuesday has yet to be determined.
