Parts of the city are still struggling to clean up from Wednesday’s heavy rainfall.
One area hit particularly hard was Howard Beach in Queens.
The rain completely flooded a low-lying section of 149th Avenue. That water has since receded, but it left behind plenty of flood-damaged homes and water-logged furniture.
Local residents say an outdated sewer system is to blame.
“The sewer system is very bad that wasn’t even a storm that was just rain, just rain, what am I supposed to do?” said one resident.
Another said she lost many personal belongings that cannot be replaced.
“Many of our personal things books photographs, all of that stuff,” she said.
The Department of Environmental Protection says the area’s sewer system is in good shape and there are no plans for any upgrades.
