Some Families Protest Move of Unidentified 9/11 Victims’ Remains to WTC Site

In a solemn procession, remains of more than 1,000 unidentified victims of the attacks of September 11th were moved Saturday to the World Trade Center site.

Thousands of vacuum-sealed plastic pouches containing bone fragments have been transferred from the medical examiner’s office on the east side to an underground repository in the same building as the National September 11th Memorial and Museum.

The remains will only be accessible to victims’ relatives and forensic scientists who are still trying match the bone fragments to DNA.

Some family members, however, are protesting the move saying their concerns about the final resting place went unheard.

“We were never given the opportunity to say that we did not want them in a museum. As a mater of fact, we never knew the plans that they were going to be placed into a museum,” said Rosaleen Tallon, who lost her brother in the attacks.

“We thought there would be some sort of tomb or memorial put there with these remains, not in a museum 70 feet under ground,” said Ilene Walsh, who lost her son.

Family members are concerned the repository may be prone to flooding, because it’s located at bedrock level.
