State Republicans begin their two-day convention today in Rye Brook where they are expected to nominate Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino to challenge Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Astorino has been touting his record as a tough, financially-responsible leader. But a recent Siena College poll shows Governor Cuomo with a commanding 30 point lead over his GOP challenger.
“This is our time. The Democrats have had three governors and two attorney generals and two comptrollers. They’ve had eight years to do something about this state. We are still dead last – 50th – as far as being business friendly. We are still the highest-taxed state in the United States,” said GOP State Chairman Ed Cox.
The party is also criticizing Cuomo for inviting President Barack Obama to Westchester County to talk about infrastructure near the Tappan Zee Bridge today.
Astorino is expected to be formally nominated today, and formally accept it tomorrow.
Astorino has chosen Chemung County Sheriff Christopher Moss to be his running mate.
He is a vocal opponent of gun control laws recently passed in the state.
Also expected to be nominated are John Cahill for Attorney General and Robert Antonacci for State Comptroller.
Cahill is a former aide to Governor George Pataki, while Antonacci is the comptroller for Onandaga County.
Republicans have not won a statewide election since 2002.
