City kids dove into Asphalt Green’s 19th Annual Big Swim Meet and Benefit Saturday.
Approximately 1,000 public school students are splashing their way to raise money for the Waterproofing program.
It’s a 20-year initiative to fight childhood drowning by teaching basic skills and safety tips.
Organizers and instructors said it’s rewarding to see children enjoying themselves in a safe way in the water.
“Drowning is the second-leading cause of accidental death among children, and for black and Hispanic children, it’s even more, so Asphalt Green is committed to helping children how to swim,” said Carol Tweedy, executive director of Asphalt Green.
“All these kids they have made so much progress, putting their face in the water, submerging, even going all the way six feet under the water, or swimming across 25 feet, 25 yards across the pool,” said swim instructor Nestor Bejarano. “As an instructor, it feels great seeing this progress.”
