A group of activists has filed a complaint over allegations of illegal spying by the police department.
The group alleges that police are spying on some activist organizations by infiltrating their meetings.
They hope to get Philip Eure, the department’s first independent inspector general, to release information about which groups may have been targeted and how much it’s costing the city.
“These are people who are committing their times selflessly to improve our country, the functioning of our government, improve their neighborhoods with gardens and affordable housing and they’re being targeted by our police force, and we want to know why and we want a full audit of these practices so we can stop them,” said Robert Jereski.
Tuesday was Eure’s first day on the job.
His office says it’s reviewing complaints and will determine whether to investigate once fully staffed.
