The city’s beaches are open for business, but beach-goers are getting a slow start. NY1′s Bree Driscoll filed the following report.
The snow and ice of this winter definitely left its mark.
“Rough getting to work, you know, you have to dig out the car,” said one person.
“Yeah it was terrible. I have three cars that I park on the street—a very narrow street. I had to dig them all out. I just stopped with my shoveling and looked up at the sky and said, ‘when is the summer going to be here?’” another said.
Well it is here—unofficially, at least.
The city’s beaches opening for the season is making it easier to thaw out.
The parks department runs 14 miles of beaches throughout the city.
Just because they are open, though, doesn’t mean people will come—as was evident on Midland and South Beaches Saturday.
“Well I guess because of the weather, it’s not actually the ideal day,” one person said.
While it wasn’t quite warm enough yet people are still getting ready for the season.
“We buy our sun tan lotion, we get our new umbrellas, we get our new beach chairs,” another beach-goer said.
While city beaches are open for the season, Cedar Grove Beach and Wolf’s Pond Park Beach on Staten Island remain closed.
Construction crews are still working to repair the parts of the beaches damaged by Hurricane Sandy.
Lifeguards are out on duty everyday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Labor Day.
