Lawmakers are trying to tackle rising heroin use in the city.
Senator Charles Schumer is calling for $ 100 million in federal funding to combat the heroin trade.
Pointing to figures showing that heroin seizures are happening at levels not seen since the early 90s, he said the city has become a hotbed for the drug.
Schumer says the money would help fund the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas Program.
“What we’re seeing is an influx of more experienced large-scale heroin dealers entering our cities and setting up warehouses in the Bronx and parts of Manhattan. That’s what we have to go after. We cannot wait until the heroin problem becomes an epidemic, a scourge that we can’t get rid of, so we need to act quickly and we need to act now,” said Schumer.
A recent city report found that officials seized more than 288 pounds of heroin in the city in the first four months of the year.
