St. Louis’ OT Winner Moves Rangers Within One Win of Stanley Cup Finals

Martin St. Louis scored at the 6:02 mark of overtime to give the Rangers a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals at Madison Square Garden Sunday night.

A pass from Rangers forward Carl Hagelin found a wide-open St. Louis along the boards, and St. Louis rifled a high shot past Canadiens goaltender Dustin Tokarski to move New York within one win of the Stanley Cup Finals.

It was St. Louis sixth goal of the playoffs.

Hagelin opened the scoring a little more than seven minutes into the first period on a shorthanded goal, and the Rangers took that 1-0 lead into the locker room after one period.

Montreal evened the score a little more than eight minutes into the second period on a goal by defenseman Francis Bouillon.

The Rangers took the lead back late in the second period, as Derick Brassard, who returned to the lineup Sunday night after missing the previous two games due to injury, beat Tokarski with 56 seconds remaining to give the Rangers a 2-1 cushion heading into the second intermission.

The Rangers took eight penalties in the game, and their sixth one cost them. Forward Dominic Moore went off for tripping 32 seconds into the third, and on the ensuing powerplay, Montreal’s P.K. Subban beat Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist with a shot from the point to tie the score at 2 exactly two minutes into the third period.

New York was able to successfully kill off a holding the stick penalty taken by forward Benoit Pouliot in overtime before St. Louis scored the winner.

The Rangers got a scare late in the third period when Montreal’s Alex Galenychuk, who won the game in overtime for the Canadiens in Game 3, had a chance to put the Canadiens ahead in Game 4 with 3:15 remaining, but his shot deflected off the stick of Lundqvist, hit the crossbar and bounced out without crossing the goal line.

Lundqvist made 27 saves for New York, while Tokarski made 26 for Montreal.

The Rangers now lead the series 3-1 and can clinch their first berth in the Stanley Cup Finals since 1994 with a win in Game 5 in Montreal Tuesday night. That game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
