Man Who Allegedly Stole Money from Manhattan Church Sought by Police

Police are looking for a man that they say stole money from a church.

Surveillance video shows the suspect entering the Immaculate Conception Church on East 14th Street just after 1 p.m. Sunday.

Police say he went into a bedroom on the third-floor rectory and stole $ 11,000 from a nightstand.

Church officials say the suspect was seen by a priest as he wandered the private quarters.

“Father Woo was on the second floor. The second time the guy tried his door, Father Woo heard him and came out of his room, and didn’t confront him, but kind of yelled at him, ‘What are you doing up here?’ and the guy said, I’m looking for my Aunt Maria,’” said one priest with the church.

“It just seems weird that he would be able to walk and know to even go looking up there,” said one person.

“That’s like the lowest of the low, isn’t it? It’s terrible,” said another.

The church said the stolen money was meant to be donated to a Bishop in Nigeria.

Anyone with information on the case should contact the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS, or text CRIMES and then enter TIP577, or visit http://ift.tt/17IHIZe.
