Education officials need to get the word out about free summer meals that could feed thousands of city kids, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer said Thursday.
Only one-third of those eligible for the city’s Summer Meals Program reported that they participated, according to a new study from the Food Bank for New York City.
Brewer said officials need to do a better job alerting families when and where they can access the free food and work with the city Housing Authority to coordinate locations for the meals.
“People do not know about the summer food program,” said Brewer. “The signs are hard to find, and there is no information that is available.”
Schools officials said they serve roughly 7 million meals during the summer, and the $ 400 million tab is picked up by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
