Memorial Day Weekend is expected to be a busy one as New Yorkers head out to the city’s beaches and beyond.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says it is prepared to accommodate nearly five million travelers on the city’s roads, rails and airports going into this year’s holiday weekend.
Nationally, AAA estimates 36.1 million people will travel more than 50 miles over the holiday, making it the busiest Memorial Day Weekend since 2005.
Most of those travelers are expected to hit the nation’s roads.
AAA says rising gas supplies have pushed prices lower than last year’s average of $ 3.63 a gallon, making it a bit cheaper to drive.
Another 2.6 million people are expected to fly this holiday weekend, up nearly two and a half percent from last year.
An estimated 1.7 million people will take a cruise, train or bus, a jump of nearly seven percent from a year ago.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is adding extra service today to help with the Memorial Day Weekend commute.
The Long Island Rail Road will run eight additional trains out of Penn Station in the early afternoon.
Those will run along the Babylon, Port Jefferson, Port Washington and Far Rockaway branches.
The railroad is also launching its special Cannonball Express service from Manhattan to the Hamptons and Montauk today.
Metro-North will run 18 extra trains out of Grand Central along the Hudson, Harlem and New Haven Lines.
The Staten Island Railway is adding extra trains starting at 2:30 p.m. from the St. George Ferry Terminal.
The MTA says the subway will follow a Sunday schedule on Monday, though construction work will affect service on 13 lines this weekend.
