Houston Street reopened Friday after a destructive water main break Thursday.
Crews finished repair work Friday afternoon.
Several feet of muddy water flooded the road on Thursday, impacting local businesses.
Jake Dell, the co-owner of Katz’s Deli, said watching the ground get swallowed up by the sinkhole was bizarre.
“The earth disappears in front of you, and that’s kind of an unnerving thing to see,” he said. “And it was kind of nerve-racking to see, when would it stop, and would it engulf the restaurant, and would there be no more Katz’s to speak of? And luckily, thank God, nothing like that happened.”
Investigators said the water main was installed in 1959.
Officials are running tests to see what caused the break.
