One of the so-called “Central Park Five” spoke out for the first time since the group reached a $ 40 million settlement with the city.
Kharey Wise joined the Reverend Al Sharpton at his National Action Network’s weekly rally Saturday.
Wise was one of five teenagers wrongly convicted in the 1989 rape and beating of a female jogger.
Wise thanked the man who ultimately confessed to the crime, which led to the group’s exoneration in 2002.
Meanwhile, Sharpton says the settlement will help the men recover from the injustice.
“We should not be a city that turns its back on the city officers taking advantage and coercing and forcing young minors to confess to something they didn’t do,” Sharpton said.
“Mr. Reyes, I thank you. If you would not have said anything, I would still be doing life for something I didn’t do. For the new mayor: Yes, yes, yes,” Wise said.
The settlement, which the “Central Park Five,” rallied for, must still be approved by City Comptroller Scott Stringer and a federal judge.
