Mayor Signs 11 Vision Zero Bills

Mayor Bill de Blasio is taking his plan to eliminate traffic deaths a bit further.

The mayor signed 11 bills related to Vision Zero.

They include creating more slow zones and lowering the speed limit near 50 schools.

The city will also establish new penalties for vehicles that fail to yield to pedestrians.

Several new laws target the taxi industry.

One requires the Taxi and Limousine Commission to suspend a driver if he or she is involved in a crash where a person is critically injured.

“We committed ourselves to a series of changes that would be strong and immediate to protect pedestrians, to protect bicyclists, to protect motorists to protect all of us and, particularly, to protect our children,” de Blasio said.

“Clearly, we are dealing with a mayor and a group of people who are very interested in helping and that feels really nice,” says Dana Lerner, whose son was hit by a cab.

The mayor signed the legislation in Queens near the site of a crash last year which killed an 8-year-old boy.
