Manhattan DA Announces 28 More Arrests in 9/11 Disability Scam

More than two dozen police and firefighters were charged Tuesday in connection with a growing disability fraud scam.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr. says the 28 defendants are charged with grand larceny in the second degree and criminal facilitation in the fourth degree.

They are accused of being part of a decades-long scam that bilked the disability system out of more than $ 20 million.

The DA says some recipients were advised to link their symptoms to the September 11th attacks.

While some claim they couldn’t care for themselves, prosecutors say they have video showing them engaging in a wide variety of activities.

The DA says 16 of the defendants were also collecting pension as retirees from the NYPD, four from the FDNY, one from both the NYPD and FDNY and one from the Department of Corrections.

Just last month, officials say 106 arrests were made in connection with the scam.
