Senator Charles Schumer is pushing for restrictions on what companies can do with data that they collect from a host of new technologies in your car.
Schumer cited a study by the Government Accountability Office, which found that carmakers are already collecting data on drivers and selling it to advertisers.
He says that technologies such as GPS, vehicle-to-vehicle communication and so-called black boxes are great for safety, but can also be a threat to privacy.
“It’s not just general data, how many people shop at this store,” Schumer said. “They know it’s you. They know where every single person went and have a whole ream of data on where they went and what they did, without the driver’s knowledge.”
Schumer is asking the Federal Trade Commission and the National Traffic Highway Safety Administration to make new guidelines for what carmakers can do with their data.
He also says that he wants drivers to have the opportunity to opt out of data collection entirely.
