A rookie New York City Police Department officer is recovering after being shot twice in Brooklyn yesterday while his alleged shooter awaits formal charges.
Police say Officer James Li and his partner, Officer Randy Chow, saw two men entering a B46 bus through the back door around 5 p.m Wednesday at Utica Avenue and Empire Boulevard in Crown Heights.
When the officers brought them off the bus, police say Rashaun Robinson, 28, ran off, then turned and fired three shots.
Lee was hit in the legs, but Chow was not hurt.
Both officers fired back, but neither hit Robinson, who was later arrested inside a nearby building.
A 45-caliber gun was recovered at the scene.
Two witnesses who came to Officer Lee’s aid turned out to be off-duty EMTs Shaun Alexander and Kadija Hall.
Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner William Bratton went to the hospital to visit the officers, both of whom just graduated from the NYPD Academy in December.
“I think for anybody, the first time someone turns on you with a gun and starts firing, you can imagine what that experience would be like for any human being, any new officer, and these officers were outstanding in their response,” de Blasio said.
“So a dangerous felon now off the street, another firearm off the street, all as a result of very good police work by two rookie police officers who I’m pleased to have as members of the New York City Police Department,” Bratton said.
Police say Robinson has six prior arrests in the city and an active drug warrant from Pennsylvania.
