Proposed Bill Would Require City Mark Speed Camera Locations

As Mayor Bill de Blasio pushes for more red light and speed cameras around the city, one Staten Island lawmaker wants to let drivers know where the cameras are installed.

Republican Councilman Vincent Ignizio will introduce a bill today that would require signs pointing out which intersections have red light cameras.

The city’s current strategy is to keep the locations a secret.

But Ignizio says the priority should be getting drivers to slow down and stop, not making money for the city.

Drivers on Queens Boulevard had mixed reactions.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea. That would defeat the purpose,” said one driver.

“I would think that would defeat the purpose. Most people know that there’s cameras and they try to catch you so I don’t think they should tell you where the cameras are,” said another driver.

“I mean for the driver it’d be good because you don’t get a ticket but then people would be cautious and just stop because of that,” added a third driver.

Mayor de Blasio is pushing Albany to allow the city to install as many red light and speed cameras as it wants.
