Mayor: Administration is Not Above City’s Traffic Laws

During a press conference to discuss post Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts Monday, Mayor Bill de Blasio addressed the press again about his security detail speeding last week.

The mayor emphasized that no one, including him, is above the law.

But he refused to second guess what he described as a matter of security protocol because NYPD officers were driving the vehicles caught breaking some traffic laws.

“So, I just want us to understand there are two separate questions here. Should everyone who works for me and should I follow the law scrupulously? Of course. Yes. If the NYPD in any given instance believes there is a security reason for doing something a certain way, I think that’s important to recognize and respect,” de Blasio said.

After a press event in Queens last week Thursday, WCBS-TV followed de Blasio’s motorcade back to City Hall.

The station’s cameras caught the two SUVs speeding, running stop signs, and changing lanes without signaling.

De Blasio was in the front passenger seat of the lead vehicle.
