Local leaders slammed the city’s plan to temporarily move Woodside students at Public School 11 to PS 171 in Astoria — despite growing opposition.

The city is going ahead with a controversial plan to temporarily move Woodside students to Astoria — despite growing opposition.

Elected officials urged the city on Tuesday to scrap the plan to place Public School 11 kindergartners and first-graders at PS 171, three miles away, while their own badly overcrowded school is enlarged.

“The whole point of going to your local, zoned school is to be close,” said Deborah McGowan, 44, of Woodside, whose kindergartner could be affected. “If your child gets sick, you have to take two subways to get there.”

Officials also suggested the city consider moving the kids to schools that are outside the district but still closer, including PS 313 in Sunnyside.

“These working parents shouldn’t have to deal with the difficulties of all this when there are other options closer to home,” said state Sen. Michael Gianaris (D-Astoria.)

The students are to be bused to PS 171 for a year and then moved into the newly constructed PS 339, in Woodside, until the addition is completed. It is expected to take three years.

“Our aim is to deliver a state-of-the-art addition to the building,” Department of Education spokesman Harry Hartfield said in a statement. “We will be scheduling a meeting with the entire school community.”

PS 11 officials declined to comment.
