12-year-old girl survives 30-foot plunge down elevator shaft

A 12-year-old girl fell down an elevator shaft in a freak accident and broke her arm in Lower Manhattan Friday, cops said.

The girl was with her babysitter when she hit the elevator button, which requires a special key, inside the Crosby Street building near Broome Street around 3 p.m., cops said.

The doors opened before the elevator arrived and the girl stepped into an open shaft, dropping approximately thirty feet from the lobby to the sub-basement, cops and witnesses said.

The girl was rescued by the FDNY, authorities said.

She was rushed to Bellevue Hospital where she is being treated for a broken arm and injuries to her shoulder, cops said.

The Department of Buildings is investigating.
