A 14-year-old boy has been charged with murder and was remanded Friday in connection with the deadly shooting of a man on an MTA bus in Brooklyn Thursday night.
The Brooklyn District Attorney’s office says that Kahton Anderson is being charged as an adult.
He’s also facing charges of reckless endangerment and illegal possession of a firearm.
Police say the shooting took place on board a B15 bus in Bedford-Stuyvesant at around 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
They say the teen shot 39-year-old Angel Rojas in the back of the head.
Rojas was on the bus coming home from a 12-hour shift at work.
Police say they do not believe Rojas was the target. They say they think that Kahton was aiming for a rival gang member.
“My understanding also is this once again involves crews. The stupidity of those gangs that basically, over nothing, are trying to kill each other and unfortunately, in the process, kill innocents, as they did with this hard-working young man trying to raise his family,” said Police Commissioner William Bratton. “A life needlessly lost, taken by a 14-year-old who felt it necessary to carry a gun on a city bus and shoot it. Amazing.”
Rojas was pronounced dead at Woodhull Hospital.
Family members say that the father of two moved to New York from the Dominican Republic four years ago.
“He was a good man. He used to go to work, go to work for us so we could live and could eat and survive,” said the victim’s son, Saury Rojas.
A handgun was recovered at the scene.
