EXCLUSIVE: NYPD detectives reportedly drank for hours prior to wrist-shooting

The two detectives out drinking last week before one shot the other in the wrist were boozing for several hours — each downing at least 11 beers, a police source said.

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton on Monday told Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce and other chiefs from the Detective Bureau that there will be tighter supervision of detectives when they leave their precincts and go out on cases, two other sources said.

“The commissioner wants accountability,” one of the sources said.

Det. Jay Poggi, a 31-year veteran, was charged with driving while intoxicated last Friday after he shot Det. Matthew Sullivan.

Sullivan, a 12-year veteran, underwent a second surgery last weekend. It’s not clear if he ever will be able to fire a weapon.

Poggi, 57, told investigators he and Sullivan, 35, were sitting in their unmarked car in Howard Beach when his revolver accidentally discharged while showing it to the younger detective.

But investigators believe the shooting happened outside the car — possibly with the detectives firing the gun in the air — and that more much about the incident remains a mystery because Poggi and Sullivan have yet to be fully interviewed by Internal Affairs, sources said.

The detectives signed out of their command, the 75th Precinct stationhouse in East New York, at 6:45 p.m. last Thursday, ostensibly to drive to Far Rockaway to investigate an unsolved robbery.

At some point, sources said, the duo went drinking at Rockaway Park’s The Wharf Bar & Grill.

Video from the bar shows them knocking back drinks for at least four hours, a source said. Poggi had 11 beers, while Sullivan had at least that many plus a shot of booze, the first source said.

Poggi blew a .113 in a blood alcohol test, a prosecutor said in court. Poggi and his lawyer have not commented.

A source familiar with the Monday meeting said Bratton wants supervisors to keep in regular contact with detectives out in the field.

That source also said Bratton appeared concerned about the 8 a.m. start time that most squad detectives have after ending the previous shift at 1 a.m.

Traditionally, many detectives working what is known as the “chart” will sleep at the precinct to avoid a long drive home, sometimes going out for drinks before calling it a night.

But any change in the chart would have to result from collective bargaining talks.

The Detectives Endowment Association, meanwhile, has called an emergency board meeting Tuesday to discuss the incident and possible fallout.
