The Port Authority quietly paid renowned architect Santiago Calatrava $ 500,000 for bridge design plans it didn’t ask for and couldn’t use, according to a report.
The Spanish architect was paid after two commissioners — David Steiner and Anthony Sartor — pressed staffers to meet with Calatrava’s team and review their plans for the Goethals and Bayonne bridges, The Record of Bergen County reported.
Steiner hand-delivered Calatrava’s plans in March 2011 to agency staffers, who rejected them after meeting with Calatrava’s team, The Record reported.

Sartor has since resigned from the Port Authority. The half-million dollar payment was the most the agency could spend without a public vote by its governor-appointed commissioners.
