The Port Authority quietly paid renowned architect Santiago Calatrava $ 500,000 for bridge design plans it didn’t ask for and couldn’t use, according to a report.
The Spanish architect was paid after two commissioners — David Steiner and Anthony Sartor — pressed staffers to meet with Calatrava’s team and review their plans for the Goethals and Bayonne bridges, The Record of Bergen County reported.

Sartor has since resigned from the Port Authority. The half-million dollar payment was the most the agency could spend without a public vote by its governor-appointed commissioners.
