Experts say the planned shut-downs of Interfaith Medical Center and Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn are more evidence that small and mid-sized hospitals are increasingly finding it hard to pay the bills, especially if they serve poorer neighborhoods. ALBANY — Expressing concerns that Brooklyn Health Partners won’t be able to provide adequate care at the Long Island College Hospital site, Mayor de Blasio Wednesday called on the State University of New York to begin talks with other bidders.

De Blasio, who had previously raised concerns about the business’ ability to deliver what it promised in its winning bid, asked SUNY to move on to “preserve quality, uninterrupted health care services” when SUNY gives up control of LICH on May 22.

Brooklyn Health Partners earlier Wednesday dismissed talk of problems and said it expects the deal will be finalized within days. State officials say that’s unlikely.
