Cops are investigating the death of a 4-year-old Bronx boy who may have accidentally ingested rat poison, sources said Tuesday.
Juan Sanchez died at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital at 9:49 a.m. Monday, a day after he may have swallowed rat poison left by an exterminator two weeks ago in the family’s Tinton. Ave. apartment, sources said.
The incident unfolded after Juan, his mom and his four brothers, ages 3 to 10, returned home from a park about 11 a.m. Sunday to have pancakes.
Once inside, Juan’s 8-year-old brother told his mother he had seen his younger sibling drinking from a 25-ounce can of King Cobra malt liquor left in the building’s hallway, sources said.
At that point, the mother insisted Juan eat his pancakes, ostensibly to soak up the alcohol.
A little more than two hours later, however, Juan fell ill, foaming at the mouth and turning blue, sources said.
The child was rushed to Lincoln Hospital, then transferred to Columbia-Presbyterian, but he could not be saved.
Toxicology tests found no alcohol in his system, sources said.
The boy’s mother and father were interviewed by detectives, but police do not suspect foul play.
The mother told detectives rat poison had been placed in the home by an exterminator.
It was not clear if such poison was also in the park where Juan and his siblings had played.
