Sen. Charles Schumer is fighting back in the wake of reports that the federal government might redirect disaster aid away from New York.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development has reportedly considered using up to $ 2 billion from the Sandy relief bill to other states recently affected by natural disasters.
Schumer, who co-authored the bill with New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez, said that is unacceptable.
“Superstorm Sandy was the reason the bill was passed. It was the clear intent of the legislation that New York and New Jersey homeowners get aid first and foremost,” Schumer said. “That cannot and will not change now.”
More than $ 3.5 billion in the Community Development Block Grant funding designated for Hurricane Sandy victims remains available.
