Former Chief Adviser to Pataki Announces Run for State Attorney General

YONKERS, N.Y. – State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman now has a Republican challenger.

John Cahill announced a run for the state’s top legal job from his house in Yonkers Sunday.

Cahill is no stranger to state government. He formerly served as a top adviser to Governor George Pataki and as commissioner of the state Department of Conservation.

In announcing his run, he took a swipe at recent attorneys general.

“In New York State, the chief steward and defender of justice is the attorney general. As our state Constitution delegates, this is the platform from which that leadership must be exerted,” Cahill said. “Yet in recent years, the office of New York State attorney general has been relegated to little more than a political stepping stone to the governor’s mansion. That is unacceptable.”

Meanwhile, a Schneiderman spokesman released a statement in response, saying, “Attorney General Schneiderman has spent his entire career working to ensure equal justice under the law for all New Yorkers. He looks forward to talking about his record with voters in the coming months.”
