Mayor Unveils ‘Ambitious’ 10-Year Affordable Housing Plan

Mayor Bill de Blasio on Monday launched what he called the largest and most ambitious affordable housing program in the country.

Speaking in Fort Greene, the mayor vowed to build or preserve 200,000 units of affordable housing over the next 10 years.

An estimated half million people would be served by the plan.

“It is faster and more ambitious than anything we’ve seen before because the crisis is greater than anything we’ve seen before,” said de Blasio. “We’re gonna use every tool of this city government in ways more aggressive than ever attempted in the past to protect the interests of our people and make sure every kind of person could live in New York City.”

De Blasio first pushed this plan during his campaign, and proposed a mandate that developers include affordable housing in large developments.

The mayor also suggested new incentives to convert vacant lots and abandoned buildings into affordable units.

He had originally planned to lay out his plan last Thursday.

The announcement was later postponed because of the contract agreement with the teachers union.
