The New York City Rescue Mission celebrated Mother’s Day by cutting the ribbon on an expansion that will help the city’s neediest women.
The Mission unveiled a three-story addition to its building today.
Leaders say it’s the culmination of a plan more than 10 years old, and it will allow them to provide shelter to women for the first time.
Volunteers from a spa were also on hand to give women free make-overs.
“I never had something like this done on my face, never, ever. I don’t even know how to use make up myself so this is very nice,” said one woman.
“Every New Yorker knows that the problem of homelessness is growing. We’re all looking for solutions and it’s a big problem and we can’t solve all of it, but one of the things we can do is, for the first time in our 142-year history, open our doors to women who are in crisis,” said Dr. Craig Mayes, Executive Director of the New York City Rescue Mission.
The Mission says although the construction is mostly finished, it still needs a few city permits before it can accept new residents.
