Friday morning’s derailment of an F train is causing some service interruptions this weekend for subway riders in Queens.
According to the MTA, F train service is running in two sections: between 21 St-Queensbridge and Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue in both directions, and making all local stops from Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue to Jamaica-179 Street in both directions. Shuttle buses will replace F service between 21 St-Queensbridge and Roosevelt Avenue, according to the MTA.
The MTA says E trains are also operating in two sections: from Queens Plaza to World Trade Center in both directions and from Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue to Jamaica Center/Parsons/Archer in both directions. According to the MTA, shuttle buses will replace E service between Queens Plaza and Roosevelt Avenue, making all local stops.
On both of these lines, the MTA suggests that riders traveling between Jackson Heights or Elmhurst and Manhattan take the 7 train, while riders traveling between Jamaica and Manhattan take the J train.
According to the MTA, there is also no R train service between Forest Hills-71st Avenue in Queens and 57th Street-7th Avenue in Manhattan. The MTA advises customers to transfer to a Queens-bound N or 7 at 42nd Street-Times Square and then transfer to a shuttle bus.
Investigators are working to figure out what caused the F train to derail in a tunnel south of 65th Street and Broadway in Queens at approximately 10:30 a.m. Friday.
More than 1,000 passengers were evacuated from the underground tunnel.
The New York City Fire Department says 15 people suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
Another four were brought to nearby hospitals with more serious injuries, mostly from smoke inhalation.
Transit officials said six of the eight cars jumped the tracks.
