The New York Rangers finally broke their scoreless streak against the Pittsburgh Penguins Wednesday night, but it wasn’t enough for the win.
Carl Hagelin and Mats Zuccarello scored for the Blueshirts, but the Rangers fell 4-2 to the Penguins in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference semifinal matchup at Madison Square Garden.
The Rangers now trail the best-of-seven series three game to one, with Game 5 Friday night in Pittsburgh.
Hagelin’s goal five minutes into the second period broke a Pittsburgh shutout streak that extended back to the start of Game 2, but the Rangers’ power play again came up empty, as their 0-for-2 performance extended their power play slump to no goals in their last 36 tries.
New York, playing for the sixth time in nine nights, was buoyed by the return of forward Chris Kreider, who played for the first time since breaking his left hand a month ago.
Henrik Lundqvist made 23 saves in the loss.
