The former Giants linebacker Harry Carson was at the center of an uncomfortably odd racially-tinged moment during a supposedly lighthearted panel discussion Wednesday at NYU. When the group’s moderator, NYU professor Arthur R. Miller, asked Carson to describe his draft-day experience, he phrased the start of his question with, “And you’re a South Carolina boy and you go to South Carolina State…” Carson cut him off mid-sentence:

“Be careful how you say, ‘Boy,’” Carson said.

The audience laughed uneasily while Michael Strahan, also on the panel, made a face to the crowd to help relax and lighten the mood of the room.

But Carson wasn’t done, adding, “There was an owner of a basketball team,” he said, his voice trailing off, referencing LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling, who was banned for life by the NBA for making racist comments to a gal-pal in a conversation that was leaked.

After a few more uncomfortable moments, Miller said, “We’ll come back to you Harry,” and Carson didn’t talk for several minutes as Strahan and Victor Cruz, also on the panel, filled the void.

Carson has never been one to bite his tongue. He’s been an outspoken presence on the topic of head injuries and has emerged as an advocate for many former players who have struggled with health issues in their post-career lives. Carson has said that if he knew of the prevalence and long-lasting effects of concussions beforehand, he never would have gotten into football.
