SUNY Pulls Out of Deal With Top Bidder for LICH Site

The State University of New York announced Monday evening that it was unable to come to a contract agreement with Brooklyn Health Partners, who scored the highest on an RFP proposal plan for the Long Island College Hospital site.

Brooklyn Health Partners had been scheduled to begin providing medical care when SUNY Downstate gives up control on May 22.

SUNY had sole discretion to terminate negotiations after 30 days.

Brooklyn Health Partners was selected as the developer for the site last month after it scored the highest of nine proposals for the site in the RFP process.

However, the mayor’s office raised questions last week about whether BHP can follow through with its promise of maintaining a full-service hospital in Cobble Hill.

Brooklyn Health Partners says it was prepared to make a $ 25 million down payment and start providing medical care when SUNY Downstate gives up control.

Doubts were raised after the group was recently forced to withdraw a lawsuit filed against SUNY Downstate, claiming the hospital was not being sincere in their negotiations.

SUNY will now try to come to an agreement with the second-place bidder, The Peebles Corporation, which is not offering a full-service hospital.

In a statement, Brooklyn Health Partners said, “BHP is currently meeting with its attorneys to determine its next course of action. We are deeply disappointed that for the last 30 days SUNY has failed to negotiate in good faith. Despite SUNY’s failure to produce important documents until late this weekend, BHP produced all requested documents and a 10 percent down payment to close.”
