Staten Islanders March in Defense of Michael Grimm

Supporters of Congressman Michael Grimm marched a quarter-mile on Staten Island on Saturday, a parade they said was for justice and in response to the federal indictment Grimm now faces. NY1′s Courtney Gross filed the following report.

“This is about you it’s not about them. And if you’ll have me, I will lead the charge baby,” Congressman Michael Grimm said to his supporters after a so-called “march for justice” on Saturday.

It was the first campaign rally for Grimm after he was hit with a 20-count federal indictment last month, which includes charges of tax evasion and fraud.

Grimm says he is still seeking re-election. He faces a Brooklyn democrat, Domenic Recchia, a former councilman.

Grimm remains determined to win and fight the federal criminal charges.

“Congressman Michael Grimm will be your congressman come January!” Grimm said to the crowd.

Grimm says it is Staten Island that was being bullied, and if supporters stick with him, they are patriots.

“This was how our country was formed. This is how it began. Regular average people like all of us coming together saying we believe in something a little different than what other people want us to believe,” Grimm said.

The congressman did not refer to charges specifically on Saturday, and he refuses to answer any questions about the specific allegations.

Despite the charges, supporters marching down Cedar Grove Avenue were loyalists, their support unwavering.

“I have supported him from the day one and I will continue to support Michael Grimm,”

The march, which spanned just eight blocks, was complete with a motorcade of Rolling Thunder, a veterans motorcycle group.

Many argued the congressman, the city’s only Republican in Washington, was the victim of a political witch hunt.

“This prosecutor is an Obama appointee trying to make political points during a midterm election.”

“For what they are going after, it is a shame. And I have to tell these people that karma is going to come and get them.”

It’s unclear if this show of support will follow the congressman to Brooklyn, where he is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
