City Council members introduced a bill that would create a public registry of people convicted of gun crimes.
They say anyone would be able to subscribe to automatic email alerts notifying them when a gun offender moves into their community.
There would also be a searchable database of gun offenders.
Lawmakers from the Bronx say the public deserves to be informed.
“An overwhelming majority of the people who have committed an act of gun violence have used a gun before—or if they did it now, they will use it again. What this will do is it will let them know that we are watching you,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
“I see the gun registry as a tool for raising awareness about one of the most serious problems in our society and as a tool for equipping people with information so that they can be more effective eyes and ears on the ground,” said Bronx City Councilman Ritchie Torres.
According to Council members, Mayor Bill de Blasio wants to move quickly on the proposal.
They also say the program has launched in Chicago and has been a success.
