Cops walked into a hornet’s nest Wednesday when they responded to a call of a large, menacing hive in The Bronx — just weeks after the retirement of longtime NYPD insect expert “Tony Bees.”
Police responded to the swarm in Morrisania after a maintenance worker spotted a nest of white-tailed hornets in a tree at about 8 a.m.
But without Detective Anthony “Tony Bees” Planakis — who retired following 20 years as the department’s top bee guru — cops were left holding the bag trying to corral the buggers.
“They’re pissed,” said Officer Robert Travis, who had some bee-wrangling experience in his youth upstate. “I did this growing up. It’s all farms up there,” he said.
A neighbor fetched a plastic garbage bag and handed it to the officer.
The cop then climbed atop police cruiser, captured the creepy buzzers and sealed the bag with masking tape.
