Injured Worker Rescued at Second Avenue Subway Site

An injured construction worker was rescued Wednesday from the Second Avenue Subway site.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says shortly before 4 p.m., the worker was hit in the leg by part of a concrete machine he was cleaning.

It happened about 100 feet underground between exits at 83rd Street on the Upper East Side.

“He was in an area that was very unsteady footing and kind of a dangerous area,” said FDNY Chief Anthony Devita. “It took a while to access him and package him, and we raised him up 10 stories to the surface.”

It took about 75 firefighters more than an hour to bring the worker up to street level.

They lifted him up to the surface with a construction crane.

He was brought to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital with a leg injury but is expected to survive.

The worker is stable and conscious.

The incident is still being investigated.
