City Council moves to ban anonymous campaign ads

There’ll be no more anonymous campaign ads — like the one accusing a candidate of being a spy for the KGB — if the City Council gets its way.

Two bills being introduced Thursday in the council would force independent campaigns to not only disclose the name of the sponsors, but also the top donors.

Last year’s elections saw an influx of attack ads by anonymous groups, including one that lied about a candidate wanting to lower the drinking age to 17 and another that accused Brooklyn council contender Ari Kagan of being a KGB spy.

“Many were viciously hostile,” said Brad Lander (D-Brooklyn), who is a lead sponsor of the bills, along with Dan Garodnick (D-Manhattan).
