Mount Sinai Expansion in Queens Hits Landmark as Final Steel Beam Placed

It’s a big day for the expansion project of Mount Sinai Queens. Construction started on the new state-of-the-art facility in October of last year.

Today, the final steel beam will be raised onto the roof during the “Topping off Ceremony.”

This is just the beginning for the expansion project estimated to cost about $ 125 million.

Hospital officials say they’re not only remodeling, they’re moving with health care trends.

“The building will focus on keeping people out of the hospital. We will have expanded primary care and specialists and advanced imaging all designed to allow patients to get the the care they need in one setting, often times in one visit, and hopefully avoid the need for emergency department visit or the need for hospitalization,” said Caryn Schwab, executive director of Mount Sinai.

“This is basically transforming the community. This building is six stories, it’s going to be about 145,000 square feet, limestome and glass enclosed,” said Ben Ciferri, vice presidents of facilities/project director.

The full project is expected to be completed in 2016.
