Ice cream store owner dead after gate crushes him

The owner of a tropical ice cream company was killed when the gate to his store in the Bronx fell off its hinges and crushed him, law enforcement said.

The man, in his late 60’s, was opening Delicioso Coco Helado on Saint Ann’s Avenue near East 160st Street in the South Bronx around 5:45 a.m. when a roll-down gate suddenly came apart from the building and landed on top of him, cops said.

Delicioso Coco Helado is owned by the Thiebaud family and makes tropical flavored ice cream that has been sold on iconic push carts all over the city for the past 25 years, according to their website.

The owner was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.
